Our first recommendation

For a luxurious break “away from it all”, our friends John and Liliana Tunstil have recently opened “La Preghiera” to rave reviews.

La Preghiera is a 12th century former monastery, lovingly converted to a luxury country guest house of the highest standard. With terracotta floors, huge oak and chestnut beams, and furnished with antiques and hand made furniture, it is surrounded by a beautiful garden including a private chapel (available for weddings) and swimming pool, all seemingly in deepest Umbrian countryside, but actually only a minute from the buoyant village of Calzolaro, which in turn is close to Umbertide and Citta di Castello.

Calzolaro is in the upper Tiber valley in the midst of Umbria’s many walled medieval villages and towns, in the land of poets, painters and saints.

Privately owned, it is John and Liliana’s home, where they have created graceful surroundings using their furniture and their life time collections of antiques.

Ten double or twin bedrooms are furnished and decorated to the highest standard; the beds come fitted with luxurious silk and cotton blended sheets, en-suite marble clad bathrooms, all with matching white waffle towels, guest robes and slippers.

Nothing is too much trouble for John and Liliana’s guests. Go on, indulge yourself.
